August 28, 2010

The beautiful Seattle home of Ralph and Marlys Palumbo was the setting for a memorable reception and dinner which raised $30 thousand to help research the causes and cures for psychiatric disorders.

After mingling at a lively reception, guests listened as University of Washington scientist Dr. Debby Tsuang explained up-to-the-minute approaches in mental health science. Garen, Shari, and Brandon Staglin then elaborated on why funding these approaches is making a real difference in advancing of our understanding of the brain toward better therapies.

Then guests sat down to the the all-star cuisine of the talented (and funny!) Chef David Burke, paired with the wines of Staglin Family Vineyard and Long Shadows Vineyards. Guests went home happy, many saying they were eager to come to another IMHRO party to support the cause.

The next IMHRO event is the Staglin Music Festival for Mental Health on September 11, 2010 followed by an event on October 12 in Dallas.

Staglin Music Festival for Mental Health 2009 was an incredible day, both for guests and for the cause.

Guests heard five amazing scientist speakers, savored Douglas Keane's hors d'oeuvres and over 70 stellar wines, danced with wild abandon to Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo's rock extravaganza, and warmed their spirits at Staffan Terje's sumptuous dinner. And, as of the Festival, donors had given over $2.1 million in 2009. Added to the $4.91 million in follow-on grants given to IMHRO-sponsored scientists by NIMH and private foundations in 2009, the grand total of funds IMHRO's donors have helped raise for mental health science has now passed $94 million.

Joey Pantoliano's "No Kidding, Me Too" documentary is a tour de force, even in the incomplete form in which 120 viewers got to see it at an evening screening on May 8 at UCLA's Fowler Museum. The stories of people living with brain disease, sometimes coping, sometimes not, range from heart-rending to gut-wrenching... but all of them are soul-expanding.

Bob and Lee Peterson's events in Sarasota, Florida to raise awareness and funds for mental health, were a smash! Even in a tough economy the event raised $200,000 for research and slashed stigma for the over 1700 people who attended. The Petersons, and Patty Duke, both received tribute awards--and they deserved them, for their work in spreading the word that brain disease needs no shame, and for supporting cutting-edge mental health research. Not to mention hosting a memorable event!
